About Nanjing

Nanjing, the ancient city situated in the heartland of lower Yangtze River region in China, has long been a major center of culture, education, research, politics, economy, transport networks and tourism. It is the capital city of Jiangsu province of People's Republic of China and the second largest city in the East China region, with a population of 8.5 million.
Historically, Nanjing has been known as ‘The Capital City of Six Dynasties’ and ‘A Metropolitan of Ten Dynasties’. With its long history, magnificent culture, rich heritage, and numerous historical celebrities, Nanjing is not only a famous historical and cultural city in China, but also the cradle of Chinese civilization. Taking Confucius Temple as an example, it is speccially built in memory of Confucius, it it also the first national highest academic institution of China. Besides, Nanjing has numerous famous landscapes,including Xuanwu Lake, Zijin Mountain, Jiming Temple,The Great Wall of Ming Dynasty, Qinhuai River, Chaotian Palace and so on.
Among all these landscapes,Confucius Temple is full of life.Passing through the memorial archway of “Tianxiawenshu”,which means the ancient Nanjing is the cultral center of China, we are arriving at the snack street full of the most authentic Nanjing snacks and featureed souvenirs, such as the “scholars’four jewels”,namely the writing brushes,ink sticks, paper and inkstones,calligraphy and paintings, teapot and tea, Suzhou embroidery, cheongsam, so on and so forth. Dined and wined to satiety,we can canoe through the Qinhuai River with old buidings standing on both sides, enjoying the beautiful night scenery along. 

In addition to sancks, a diverse variety of delicious local food also plays an important role in the culture of Nanjing. The most famous four dishes in Nanjing are mandarin fish in the shape of a squirrel, steamed egg and shrimp stuffed bun, plain-frying duck gizzard slice and chest meat slice with winter bamboo shoots and mushroom, plain-frying shrimp and pea.Nanjing has a long reputation for making dishes with duck.Many of the city's local favourite dishes are based on ducks, including Nanjing light salted duck, duck blood soup with vermicelli, duck oil pancake and Nanjing roast duck.The food culture in Nanjing is inexhaustible.

Nanjing also rich in artistic culture, of which Kunqu Opera and Pingtan, the intangible cultural heritages, are two of the most famous ones. Kunqu Opera singing exquisitly and dancing elegantly, while melodious Pingtan sounds fresh. Many stories of Kunqu Opera and Pingtan are inextricably linked with local attractions and historical figures.

The modern Nanjing is also full of youthful spirit and keeping up with the trend. 
Known as "The first business district in China", located in the central area of Nanjing, Xinjiekou integrates culture, commerce, economy, art and fashion, becoming a famous commercial center in China where young peoples gather and enjoy modern business and shopping life.
Besides majestic modern bridges and beautiful ancient bridges, Nanjing also has the most modern structural buildings--- Nanjing International Youth Cultural Center designed by the famous structuralist design master Zaha Hadid.

Nanjing Museum
Nanjing Museum is the earliest museum established in China. The cultural relics in the collection of the museum range from the Paleolithic period to the contemporary era, including artifacts from royal palace in different dynasty, archaeological excavations and social donation. Bronze, jade, ceramics, gold and silver utensils, bamboo, wooden, ivory and horn produncts, lacquerware, silks and silk embroidery, calligraphy and painting, seals, inscriptions and statues are all available, all of which are the treasure of each dynasty and have attracted the attention of domestic and foreign academics. They are the most direct witness to the the development of Chinese history and civilization that hand down for thousands of years.

The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum
The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum includes the mausoleum of Mr. Sun Yat-sen, the great forerunner of the democratic revolution in modern China and its affiliated memorial buildings. It integrates the essence of ancient Chinese and Western architecture and is a masterpiece of famous architects. It has a high artistic value and is known as "The first mausoleum in the history of modern Chinese architecture”. The mausoleum covers an area of more than 80,000 square meters. The construction of the mausoleum began in the spring of 1926 and was completed in the summer of 1929. Looking down from the air, it looks like a "Liberty Bell" lying flat on a green velvet blanket.

Jiming Temple
Jiming Temple has a history of more than 1700 years. It is one of the oldest Buddhist temples and royal temples in Nanjing,it enjoys the reputation of "the first temple in the Southern Dynasty" since ancient times. It is equally famous as Qixia Temple and Dingshan Temple and was the center of Buddhism in China during the Southern Dynasties,from 420 to 589 AD.

The Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge
The Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge is the first double-deck highway and railway combined bridge on the Yangtze River designed and built by China. It is of great significance in the world and Chinese bridge history. The bridge is 4,589 meters long and consists of two parts: the main bridge and the approach. The main bridge has 9 piers and 10 spans, with a length of 1576 meters and a maximum span of 160 meters. The roadway is 15 meters wide and can accommodate 4 large cars in parallel, and is eqquipped with 2-meter wide sidewalks on each side. The navigable clearance under the bridge is 24 meters above the maximum navigable water level with the width of 120 meters that the 5,000-ton seagoing vessel can pass freely.

Zhanyuan Garden
Zhanyuan Garden is the oldest existing classical garden complex built in Ming Dynasty in Nanjing, it has a history of six hundred years.  Zhanyuan covers an area of about twenty thousand square meters, with more than 20 scenic spots of different sizes. The layout of the garden is elegant and exquisite, including the magnificent ancient building complex of Ming and Qing Dynasties, high and steep rockeries,fantastic peaks with grotesque rocks, the well-known Taihu stone of the Northern Song Dynasty, the quiet and elegant buildings and pavilion on terrace.  

Qixia Mountain
Qixia Mountain has more than 80 historical sites, which boasts religious culture, emperor culture, folk culture, geological culture, stone carving culture and tea culture. The Buddhist statues and niche carved on the mountain stone are the representative of religious culture. The Red Maple Leaves is the main attraction of Qixia Mountain to attract tourists,which is one of the four scenic spots for maple viewing in China. Every late autumn, the mountain is covered with red maple leaves everywhere, just like the spectacular rosy sunset.

Yuejiang Tower
Yuejiang Tower is located beside the Yangtze River and is one of the ten famous historical and cultural buildings in China, It is a typical royal architecture in Ming Dynasty with distinct classical royal style. The name of the tower is a matephor for appreciating the scenery of the Yangtze River and feeling the joy of triumphal return. The main building is 52 meters high, with 7 floors and a total construction area of about 5,000 square meters. In 1374, Zhu Yuanzhang, the founder of Ming Dynasty, to repair failed, the building is now completed in September, 2001. 

Yifeng Gate
Yifeng Gate is now an important part of Yuejiang Tower Scenic Spot. It is one of the thirteen gates of Nanjing, when Nanjing was the capital city of Ming Dynasty. It is located between the southern foot of Lion Mountain and Silk Ball Mountain. The city wall on the two wings were built along the two mountains, taking the advantage of favourable geographical location to protect the city from enemy attack, so Yifeng Gate is of great importance in military position of Nanjing. Yifeng Gate only had a single gate when it was first built in Ming Dynasty. The Yifeng Gate was reconstructed in 2006, so it has three gates now to make the transport more convenient, with the middle one as the fast lane and the two smaller ones on both sides as slow lane. There is a official architectural style tower of Ming Dynasty on the city gate.

Mazu Palace
Mazu Palace was built in 1407 by Emperor of Ming Dynasty, Zhu Di, to thank Mazu, the Nepune in Chinese myth, and other gods for helping Zheng He, the navigator and diplomatist, sail safely on sea. It is an important historical relic of China’s Maritime Silk Road and Zheng He’s voyages to the Western World.

OX-head Mountain is a famous Buddhist mountain in Nanjing with profound cultural heritage and is the birthplace of OX-head Dhyana sect of Buddhism. Around the mountain there are Usnisa Palace, Hongjue Temple, figures and words carved on the natural stone, Thousand Buddha Hall, stupa and other cultural landscape.
